ERE stands for Emissie Reductie Eenheden (Emission Reduction Units). ERE certificates are certificates with which electric drivers may be able to earn money back for charging their electric car at home. By driving electric, CO₂ emissions are saved compared with fossil fuels. This saving represents value and is rewarded through a feed-in payment to the connection holder (the party that holds the energy contract to which charge points are connected and electric cars are charging).

Oil companies then buy the ERE certificates in order to offset their CO2 emissions on paper.
